Over forty years ago
We engaged in our first kiss
As our hearts enjoyed the show
Our lips tasted happiness
The memories of making out
Inside a project hallway
Beyond a shadow of doubt
Is still with us both today
Over the course of childhood
In a world that made some sense
We lived in a neighborhood
Protected by innocence
Though brought up with dysfunction
We were blessed by God above
And up until this junction
We would walk the road to love
Over the ensuing years
Our personalities changed
Amidst “three cheers” to the beers
Our dreams were rearranged
As we joined the party life
Both of us had not a clue
About the heartache and the strife
The party would put us through
Over the little white lines
We would snort without a care
In a room with no sunshine
Full of darkness and despair
Although we tried pretending
Push had not yet come to shove
The innocence was ending
Along with the road to love
Over the next twenty years
We would gasp and lose our breath
Amidst the news and sad tears
Of another Townie death
Although we both lost loved ones
We still somehow couldn’t see
Damage that the party done
To our friends and family
Over the Mystic River
Looking at the neighborhood
Believing as we shivered
Our own deaths would feel so good
As we said a final prayer
To Lord Jesus up above
He would graciously appear
And show us the road to love
Over our own objections
The good Lord would set us free
From the needle’s injections
And a life of misery
As He held us in His arms
And the confines of His heart
He showed us a world of charm
And gave us a brand new start
Over forty years ago
We engaged in our first kiss
Little did our sweet lips know
They’d once again feel the bliss
But as we laugh, sing and dance
We thank Lord Jesus above
For giving us one more chance
To walk down the road of love.
